I made a mistake. Why does it feel like I’m a failure?
Sending the wrong file and deciding “I’m useless” are very different judgments. Overgeneralisation and labelling are CBT terms for turning a particular event into a broad conclusion about yourself or your future. The mistake may be real; the conclusion deserves its own examination.

Keep the description specific
What actually happened: a wrong date, a missed deadline, an unanswered question? A precise description is not an excuse. It identifies what can be repaired. “I entered the appointment incorrectly” gives you something to address. “Nobody can rely on me” makes a much larger claim.

A fictional example: the wrong attachment
Sam notices that an email contains an old version of a document. The immediate thought is, “I’m not cut out for this job.” Sam can send the correct version and explain the mix-up. It may also be worth checking whether the process needs improvement, but this one email cannot measure an entire career’s competence.
Accountability without a permanent label
A balanced response need not be “It doesn’t matter.” Try something closer to, “I sent the wrong file and need to correct it. This mistake does not describe everything I do.” Taking responsibility, apologising and repairing an error do not require attacking your character.
Make the next attempt easier
Choose one repair for now and one small check for next time, such as opening an attachment before sending it. Include specific examples of work you completed well when evaluating yourself. The aim is a fuller picture, not proof that you never make mistakes. If harsh judgments become a lasting burden, support is available.
